A neighbor who recently welcomed a baby daughter faced an unexpected financial crisis when problems with her short-term disability benefits caused her to fall behind on rent during maternity leave. Although she had returned to full-time work, she needed to pay the entire overdue balance before an upcoming court date to prevent her family’s eviction.
Another local agency pledged part of the rent, and the neighbor’s aunt and uncle also helped. Even with that support, she still needed help closing the gap before the agency’s deadline.
Two Vincentians visited the neighbor at home. She explained that she had never fallen behind on her bills before. She had been steadily employed for two and a half years. In November, she hoped for a promotion. She was actively working toward greater stability with strong family support.
With support from her family, community agencies, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the neighbor gathered enough money. She paid the rental balance and kept a safe home for herself and her daughter.
The neighbor had registered with ePASS and planned to apply for WIC and SNAP benefits, along with Medicaid for her infant daughter. She was also working with her employer’s human resources department to continue the baby’s medical coverage and planned to ask Duke Energy about a payment arrangement.
Food was another concern. The neighbor had been visiting her church pantry, and the Vincentians shared information about additional local food resources. Because her baby required special formula, they also considered assistance with that essential expense.
This young mother’s experience shows how quickly a temporary income interruption can put a hardworking family at risk. It also highlights the importance of Vincentians’ personal visits. Beyond providing financial help, they listen, offer encouragement, connect neighbors with community resources, and accompany them through difficult moments with compassion and hope.
