Sometimes the greatest burden a neighbor carries is facing overwhelming challenges alone.
Recently, St. Vincent de Paul met with a neighbor whose life has been turned upside down by serious health issues. Living with kidney disease and undergoing regular dialysis treatments, she is unable to work. Although she has a daughter and grandchildren in another state, she has no one who is able to provide financial support.
Each month, after paying her rent, there is virtually nothing left for food, utilities, transportation, or other necessities. When an unexpectedly large electric bill threatened to leave her without power, she sought help wherever she could. Social Services agreed to provide significant assistance but required that the remaining balance be paid before their contribution could be released. With a deadline fast approaching, our neighbor faced the frightening possibility of losing electrical service.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, St. Vincent de Paul was able to respond quickly. An emergency request was approved, and payment was sent directly to the utility company in time to meet the deadline, allowing Social Services to release its assistance and preventing the disconnection of her electricity.
Our visit with this neighbor also focused on the future. She is actively searching for a more affordable place to live and has been given a list of community resources that may provide additional support. While the road ahead will not be easy, she is taking positive steps toward greater financial stability.
