Sometimes the people who need help the most are the ones quietly carrying the heaviest burdens.
Recently, St. Vincent de Paul met a neighbor who is a full-time care coordinator and a single mother to her five-year-old son. A veteran of the U.S. Army, she was medically discharged after suffering a spinal fracture during her service. Despite ongoing challenges, she continues to work hard to provide for her family.
In recent months, life has brought a series of overwhelming hardships. After suffering a miscarriage, she was away from work and only recently returned. At the same time, she opened her home and heart to three young children, ages four and under, whose parents are currently incarcerated. Suddenly responsible for four small children, she found herself facing extra expenses.
Our neighbor has been actively seeking assistance. She recently obtained WIC benefits for the children and secured daycare vouchers for the three children in her care. She is also working with Social Services, exploring resources available through the VA, and reaching out to local churches and community agencies for additional support.
Even with these efforts, the financial strain remains significant. Her immediate concern was paying an overdue electric bill that SVdP was able to cover.
This neighbor reminds us that sometimes the strongest acts of love happen quietly, behind closed doors, when someone chooses to care for others despite carrying burdens of their own.
