Sometimes a helping hand arrives at exactly the right moment.
A neighbor, a single mother raising three children ages 16, 8, and 3, had been struggling to make ends meet while living in a cramped two-bedroom apartment. With limited income and relying on food assistance to help feed her family, she worked hard to provide stability for her children despite having no nearby family support. An only child whose parents have passed away, she faced life’s challenges largely on her own.
After a long wait, she received welcome news that she was approved for Section 8 housing. Soon afterward, she found a four-bedroom home where each child could finally have space of their own. The family was excited about moving into what felt like a dream home and a fresh start.
Then another challenge appeared. She lost her job in early May. Although she quickly secured new employment beginning later that month, she had already used her savings to pay the security deposit on the new home. Without additional help, she would not be able to pay the first month’s rent required before moving in.
With the move-in date approaching and hope hanging in the balance, St. Vincent de Paul was able to aid with the June rent payment. Because of this support, the family was able to move into their new home and begin a new chapter together.
In addition to rental assistance, the neighbor was connected with community resources that could help furnish the home. She was also encouraged to take advantage of Duke Energy’s free home energy audit program to help manage utility costs and keep future heating bills affordable.
Today, this mother is beginning her new job and looking forward to a more stable future for her family. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and volunteers, a family now has the space, security, and hope they need to move forward.
