At 57, a mother of three found herself starting over. After leaving an abusive relationship, she needed a safe place to live for herself and her three children. With little time and few options, she moved into one of the few places that didn’t require a security deposit.
The trade-off on the security deposit makes the home far from perfect. The landlord doesn’t make repairs, and even simple problems like a plugged sink drain go unfixed. But for the neighbor and her family, it has been a refuge.
Along came another hardship: the neighbor lost her job. The bills kept coming and rent soon fell behind. She refused to give up. The neighbor began selling plasma to bring in a little money and took on a part-time job while waiting for her new full-time position to begin. Her adult children have been helping her as much as they can.
Her landlord has shown compassion, saying that he would never evict a woman with children. Still, October’s rent remains unpaid, and the stress weighs heavily on her.
She is alone in this area. Her family lives back in New York, but she has found encouragement through the kindness of others here. The St. Vincent de Paul Society has stepped in to walk alongside her, helping her stabilize her situation and regain hope.
Her story is a reminder that sometimes, even the strongest among us need a helping hand. With support, understanding, and faith, she is finding her way forward—one hopeful step at a time.
This neighbor is doing everything she can to rebuild her life. With your compassion and generosity, she and others like her won’t have to do it alone.
Your gift, no matter the size, helps families stay safe, warm, and together.
Thank you for being the light of hope for neighbors.
