How One Mother Found a Fresh Start — and How You Can Help

When a young mother of two arrived in the Triangle, she was searching for stability and a better future. The hospital where she had worked had closed. She was promised a temporary job that would soon become permanent. Unfortunately, that promise never materialized.

Without a steady income, she fell behind on rent and was eventually evicted from her apartment. She placed her family’s belongings in a storage unit, hoping it would be a short-term setback. But when she couldn’t keep up with the payments her belongings, including her children’s beds, kitchen items, and family keepsakes, were auctioned off.

As she continued to look for work, she and her children stayed in hotels when they could and sometimes slept in their car. Despite these hardships, she never gave up. Recently, she found full-time employment and began to rebuild her life. Still, the costs of securing a new apartment, like first month’s rent, deposit, and basic furnishings, felt overwhelming.

Through the generosity of another local church and the St. Francis of Assisi St. Vincent de Paul Conference, we were able to help her with some of her bills. Once she moved into her new place, she needed beds and household essentials to make it feel like home. Thanks to donations from parishioners and neighbors, we collected several items for her family.

However, as is often the case, one of our biggest challenges was delivering these donations. Moving furniture and household goods requires vehicles, time, and willing hands.

If you have a truck, or just a strong back and a little time, our St. Vincent de Paul ministry could use your help. Even a few hours every so often can make an enormous difference for families like this one, who are working hard to get back on their feet.

Together, we can turn compassion into action and help more families move from hardship to hope.
