The work of St. Vincent de Paul volunteers is about more than financial assistance—it’s about walking with our neighbors in their moments of need, seeing the full picture, and responding with love and compassion.

Recently, a mother of two young children reached out for help with a mounting electric bill. Two Vincentian volunteers visited her home to learn more about her situation and how SVdP might assist. As they listened, they discovered that her challenges were not just financial. The electric bill had become unmanageable, and they advised her to contact Duke Energy and arranging a payment plan. SVdP was able to provide the funds needed to help bring her account current.

But the story didn’t end there.

During their visit, the volunteers noticed something striking: the living room was nearly bare. No sofa, no chairs—just open space. It was clear this young family was not only struggling with utility bills but also living without the basic comforts of home.

Recognizing the deeper needs, the volunteers turned to the SVdP conference and shared what they had seen. Conversations were sparked. Furniture was located. Within days, a gently used sofa and chairs were delivered, bringing not just comfort but dignity and a renewed sense of hope.

This visit was never just about the electric bill. It was about being present, paying attention, and responding with love to the full reality of someone’s life.

That’s the Vincentian way.
