A neighbor undergoing treatment for stage 4 pancreatic cancer recently reached out to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for help with an overdue electric bill. Unable to work while receiving chemotherapy every other week, the neighbor and his wife were facing the possibility of having their electricity disconnected.
The couple is dealing with significant challenges. In addition to the neighbor’s cancer treatment, his wife has macular degeneration that affects her vision. They live in affordable housing where rent is based on income and ability to pay. Fortunately, a Duke health care assistance program helps cover medical expenses not paid by Medicare, including medications.
Another community organization had already helped with the utility bill, but a remaining balance still stood between the couple and keeping their electricity connected. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, our Vincentians obtained emergency approval and paid the remaining balance on the electric bill, preventing disconnection.
A Vincentian also delivered a Walmart gift card to help with groceries and other necessities. The couple occasionally relies on local food pantries, and they were very appreciative of the additional support.
For this neighbor and his wife, keeping the lights on meant one less worry as they face the challenges of serious illness together.
